Many congratulations to Dr Owen Watkin for obtaining his PhD for his thesis entitled “Arthur John Arberry (1905-1969): A Critical Evaluation of an Orientalist”.
A.J. Arberry is a significant but under-researched academic figure, famous in particular for his Qur’an translations, but also for many other works. Owen’s work goes a long way to provide detail on Arberry’s academic work, along with an informed critical perspective which is rich in detail. The thesis abstract notes that the work “aims to re-evaluate Arberry’s contribution to the field by examining his works and translations from a post-colonial perspective ... The post-colonial critique is the foundation to analyse the opus of Arberry and examine concepts of empire and colonialism in his works and his attitudes to the Middle East.”
I supervised the thesis (as Director of Studies) with Dr Catrin Williams. Owen was previously an MA Islamic Studies student at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. The work will become available on UWTSD’s repository online in due course.
