BREAKING: Bashar Al-Assad releases his 1st statement since his regime in #Syria collapsed. He denies fleeing & abandoning supporters. His statement also says: “I have never sought positions for personal gain.” Fittingly, this lie is issued as 2 extraordinary stories of his corruption emerged.🧵 1/

“there is concern about ethnic, religious, & sectarian tensions…However, I must express some skepticism about the predominant Western focus on their fate. These voices were absent when the Arab Sunni majority was being massacred, persecuted, and tortured.” YHS www.resetdoc.org/story/yassin…

This man is a hero like very few. Ragheed Al-Tatari was an airforce pilot who refused an order to bomb Hama during Hafez Assad’s 1982 massacres. He spent 42 years in prison. www.instagram.com/reel/DDmmFo1…

This was embarrassing for CNN:

BREAKING: CNN has now CONFIRMED that the freed “prisoner” in their report was NOT an ordinary citizen as reported and as he claimed. As local Syrian sources were saying, he was indeed an Assad intelligence officer who faked his story with CNN. 👇

Must watch Channel 4 report on the mass graves in Syria, with over 100,000 dead estimated to be buried in just one site. The challenge to forensically document these sites will be huge. www.channel4.com/news/true-sc…

ID cards found as mass graves are now being uncovered across Syria, showing the extent of the regime's brutality. Remember the world was prepared to normalise with this monster!

Few countries on Earth deserve a moment of joy more than Syria. Today was the first Friday prayers & day of rest without an Assad at the helm for 53 years. The scale of celebrations reflecting the tyranny ended. Up to 1 million killed who never got to see this day. 🟢⚪️⚫️

After being targeted and murdered by the Assad regime with the same viciousness that Israel deploys against Palestinians in Gaza, the White Helmets rescue workers are now welcomed as heroes in liberated Syria. 🧵

Syrian revolutionaries gave a fitting send-off to a Russian military convoy as it withdrew—‘The Farewell of Shoes.’ After all, what better tribute for forces that killed thousands and turned cities like Aleppo into rubble? Truly, a goodbye they’ll never forget.

Beautiful, joyous photos of the first Friday prayers since Assad's fall from the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. One of my favorite memories from Damascus (besides those involving food) a million years ago in 2005 was spending time in this mosque. I hope to return someday soon.

Out of all the work I've done on Syria I think this is my favourite. It includes a lot of digital detective work, Russia stupidly providing key evidence, and Forensic Architecture doing clever things with 3D models, all to ID one chemical weapon www.bellingcat.com/news/2020/04…

No one noticed: The peaceful & orderly takeover of Syria owes much to the rebels mirroring Prophet Muhammad’s return to Mecca after exile. Down to the words used, HTS instructions to fighters mirror that: ‘Whoever stays home is safe’ ‘Enter humbly’ ‘No sacking or robbery’ ‘Don’t terrify civilians’
